Things are happening at IAGD Sunday Islamic School (SIS). Following is brief of some of the major activities at SIS.

Comming Year 2008-09:

Grade 11: Based on the success of speech and debate and councilor  programs curriculum for grade eleven has been modified and speech and debate coaching will be a permanent part of the curriculum. Apart from councilor session two new classes are added to the curriculum. One class would deal with the concept and importance of waste and energy conservation in Islam, along Islamic contribution to science, literature and art, and the third class will be on Islamic etiquettes and how to apply them in today’s society.

Grade 1- 10: IAGD SIS’s curriculum committee has developed new curriculum grade one through ten. Curriculum has been divided into three major areas: 1. Islamic Studies, 2. Islamic History and 3. Quran.

One of the major requirements of new curriculum is the mandatory parent’s volunteering in grades one through four.

Parents with children in grades one through four are required to volunteer minimum of two weeks in class and help with student’s projects and in the implementation of basic Islam concepts. Parents will be contacted in the first two week of the year (September 2008) to create a schedule for this volunteering activity.

In order to implement the new curriculum SIS is trying its level best to prepare teachers to teach it by following new teaching and learning philosophies. In this regards a sincere effort is been made to hire new, paid and volunteer, full time teachers and to training existing teachers. IAGD SIS is thus seeking new teachers and making an appeal to the IAGD community at large to please help us in acquiring new professional, dedicated and sincere teachers, who can help us in imparting Islamic knowledge and etiquettes to our kids.

2007 – 08

Last year IAGD SIS piloted the following two new programs for eleventh graders.

1. Councilor session

2. Speech and debate coaching

During Councilor session students spent time with a young councilor to discuss social issues in reference with Islamic values. Male and female councilors were used who usually meet outside IAGD Masjid, visited CARE Michigan offices and also participated in the volunteer work

IAGD SIS procured the services of a professional organization and piloted the speech and debate coaching classes. The coaching was a great success. Several parents and teachers also participated in this seven week long program last year.

At the end of school session a teachers training workshop was organized. The main idea was to train teachers on new teaching skills. The seminar was opened to all Sunday School teachers and everyone who is interested and committed to teaching at the IAGD Sunday Islamic School. The seminar/workshop covered the following areas

Saturday June 14, 9:00- 1:00 = Classroom Communication
Saturday June 14, 2:30- 5:30 = Student Learning Style & Classroom Management
Sunday June 15, 9:00- 1:00 = Developing & Teaching Classroom ActivitiesSunday June 15, 2:30- 5:30 = Open Session (Computer Skills, Next year Teaching Assignments, etc)
This was very well attended program.
